Mission
Build a personal finance and invoicing dashboard called "ClearLedger." The concept: a clean, simple financial control centre for freelancers, sole traders, and small business owners who need to track their income, expenses, invoices, and tax obligations in one place — without the complexity of accounting software like QuickBooks or Xero. Simple enough to understand in 5 minutes, powerful enough to replace a spreadsheet forever. Core features to include: An income and expense tracker where users log earnings and costs, assign them to categories, and see a running profit/loss in real time An invoice builder where users create and send professional invoices to clients, track which are paid, unpaid, or overdue, and send automated payment reminders A tax estimation widget that automatically calculates how much the user should be setting aside for tax based on their income — updates in real time as they log earnings A cashflow calendar showing projected income and expenses for the next 30/60/90 days based on recurring transactions and outstanding invoices A dashboard showing net profit this month, outstanding invoices total, upcoming tax bill estimate, and biggest expense categories in a clean visual summary A bank transaction import — users upload a CSV from their bank and the app automatically categorises transactions Client management — save client details, view full billing history per client, and see who owes you money at a glance Why this makes serious money: Freelancers and sole traders are chronically underserved by existing tools — QuickBooks is too complex, spreadsheets are too manual. This sits perfectly in between. Every user who saves money on an accountant or avoids a tax bill is a user who pays every month without question. Churn is extremely low because financial data is sticky — nobody wants to move their records. Design direction: Clean, trustworthy, and professional. Light mode default with a dark mode option. Navy blue or deep teal as the primary accent color. Numbers should be large and readable. Charts should be simple — no overwhelming data visualisations. Feels like a premium tool, not a startup side project. Think of the design language of Monzo or Revolut — modern, clear, confidence-inspiring. Tech stack suggested: React or Next.js for frontend · Supabase for auth and database · Stripe for subscription billing · Chart.js or Recharts for financial visualisations · Papa Parse for CSV bank import Business model: Free tier — up to 5 invoices per month and basic expense tracking. This gets users hooked and their data inside the product. Pro tier — £12.99/month. Unlimited invoices, tax estimation, cashflow calendar, CSV import, and automated payment reminders. Business tier — £29.99/month. Multiple clients, team access, accountant export report, and priority support. Target customer: Freelance designers, developers, writers, photographers, consultants, tradespeople, and any sole trader who gets paid by invoice and needs to stay on top of their tax. There are over 5 million freelancers in the UK alone — this is a massive addressable market. Goal of the MVP: A working app where a user can sign up, log three income transactions, create and send one invoice, and see their estimated tax bill update on the dashboard — all in one session under 10 minutes. Why this sells for a lot: Financial data is the stickiest data there is — users never leave once their records are inside. Low churn means predictable revenue which means high exit multiples. Acquirers in the fintech, accounting software, or banking space pay a serious premium for products with embedded financial data and loyal paying users. A ClearLedger with 500 paying Pro users is worth £500k–£1.5M to the right buyer.
